Be Still

BE STILL

Psalm 46:10, “Be still, and know that I am God; / I will be exalted among the nations, / I will be exalted in the earth.”

I was talking to a friend the other day about my plans; my goals; my doings; my…

She gently, and graciously, reminded me to “Be still.” Remember, God is God. He sits high on the throne. Furthermore, He is for His own glory, and we are His vessels here on earth to let His glory be seen. With that loving arrow to my pride, humbled, I took a deep breath and thought, ”how cool is that!!” God IS ALWAYS at work. When I can look past myself and remember that I am here to be a part of His plans and purposes, I can move forward peacefully and obediently, knowing that He will accomplish His will. Psalm 46:10 has been a rock in my life. A verse I have clung to in the darkest valleys. There are things that happen in life that simply do not seem “fair” or make sense. I know you can relate.

BUT GOD!

The good news is that if we believe, we know we can trust our lives to the Father, and we know He is at work. Any time you are anxious, He is there for you to lay upon Him that burden. Matthew 11:28-30 tells us: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

He wants us to simply come to Him – to trust & rest in that truth. He has this; He knows what we need; and He already knows what will come. This verse actually comes from a longer section of Scripture that proclaims the power and security of God. Here is the whole Psalm: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Come and see what the LORD has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth. He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.’ The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.” When we are still and surrendered to God, we find peace even when the earth gives way, the mountains fall (verse 2), or the nations go into an uproar and kingdoms fall (verse 6). When life gets overwhelming and our hopes and dreams seem like they will never become our reality, remember Psalm 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

The world might provide temporary comfort in times of trouble, but God’s word satisfies to the full. How awesome is it to know that the God of the universe loves you and has your future secure. No more striving and fretting and stressing – you get to simply chill in that awesomeness. In good times and bad, that is the best news ever.
